Personal Reflections

The last 3-4 months have been a whirlwind of learning curves and deadlines, ok self-imposed deadlines, but deadlines nonetheless. It seems, however, that over years of “mastering” the art of juggling multiple life roles we have also developed the dangerous habit of choosing peak times to heap on other projects. The major project during this time was a new e-course and e-book on a very fitting topic – burnout! Now available, info at the end of the newsletter.

So with utmost wisdom this high intensity time was also the time to choose to have the condo recarpeted and to begin the process of a bathroom renovation, as well as a few other huge things happening in family life for both of us. Then just add in the “life happens” category and, well, you get the picture.

There was a very wise professor who “suggested” to us while doing our Masters degees that we were heading for burnout. As usual we were giving 150% to multiple projects on top of graduate school. In the energy and arrogance of our early 30s we protested loudly, not us. Thud…that would be the sound of doing a faceplant…thud, thud, thud..on more than one occasion. She was right.

Fast forward, I’m madly writing away at 6am (yes it’s my quiet time) and it hits me, we’re doing it again. Luckily we are smarter now (or perhaps only older) recognized the pattern and pulled out of the spin. We began to clear projects, finishing some, sidelining others till next year, deciding what we would and wouldn’t deal with and restored our energy and focus. This time the possibility of potential burnout was arrested. So you know why the e-course and e-book came into being. Between personal experiences and years of helping clients navigate the same slippery slope it just seemed like time.

Our culture endorses and admires burnout. We confuse it with success, achievement and productivity. Well in my slightly quirky world view there is no better example of this than the e-bunny. You know, pink, fuzzy, 6 inches tall, musical, and just keeps going and going and going…..

What Are We Thinking About?

How did the e-bunny get to the other side of the road?

E-bunny #1 makes a mad dash, dodging cars, jumping curbs and arrives out of breath, huffing, but exhilarated from the rush and flush with success. So e-bunny #1 keeps on using this strategy even when there is no traffic. Hey, it works.

E-bunny #2 plans to cross the road…timing is everything, well almost, there is also picking the perfect route, the weather, how many tries it may take, and most importantly what all the other bunnies will think about e-bunny making this trip again to worry about. With so many decisions to make, e-bunny #2 misses the opportunity and heads back home promising to try it again tomorrow…if everything is just right.

E-bunny #3 sizes up the road, plans a route across, checks for danger, does warm-ups, then heads across…stops at the centre curb to recharge and reassess the situation, then heads for the other side. E-bunny #3 arrives safely and with a geat feeling of success and accomplishment and enjoys a celebratory dance. You try crossing a 3-lane highway when you are only 6 inches tall!

E-bunny #4 stands by the side of the road…then sits by the side of the road, trying to summon the energy to dash once more. E-bunny #4 remembers sadly being just like e-bunny #1 always zippy, never droopy, and never stopping, until one day e-bunny #4 just lost the zip, hit the wall…it wasn’t pretty. E-bunny #4 doesn’t know a different way so sits, waits and tries to summon that old energy and pep back but to no avail. E-bunny #4 turns back, giving up on reaching the other side of the road this one last time. E-bunny #4 is out of juice.

So what do we know?

E-bunny #1 continues the mad dash and most time makes it to the other side. But it will get dodgy and let’s hope e-bunny #1 does dodge! Eewww.

E-bunny #4 has lost it all. Too many mad dashes have left e-bunny #4 at the side of the road, too pooped to pop.

E-bunny #2 is stuck in worry-mode and on the fast-track to losing any zip that once was there. Sooner or later e-bunny #2 will make a decision…it’s easier to not cross the road.

E-bunny #3 read that other fable, the one about the tortoise and the hare, and actually got it. Although the allure of the hare was enticing the tortoise made it to the finish line. E-bunny #3 has goals and plans to cross many different roads.

So, who are you most like? E-bunny #1: the mad dasher; e-bunny #2: the perfectionist; e-bunny #4: burnout bunny; or e-bunny #3: most likely to succeed?

What’s the moral of the story? Frankly, I never get the moral of fables, but I do know this for sure…there is nothing sadder than a burned out bunny!

Building Solutions

So if you end up feeling like your battery has died or feeling like toast? Here are a few simple ideas to consider:

  1. Know why you are crossing the road. It’s more than a simple decision, it’s a direction.
  2. Pace yourself. Think Los Angeles freeway! There are going to be many more roads to cross.
  3. Take care of your body. Some say life is a marathon, others see a series of sprints. Whichever you believe you still need the fuel to perform.
  4. Flip the switch regularly. Even the e-bunny needs to recharge those batteries.
